Deadly Tornado Hits Oklahoma City Area

Aftermath of Historic Tornado Outbreak

In the wake of the devastating Tornado outbreak that swept through the southern United States on May 20, 2013, one of the most destructive tornadoes touched down near Oklahoma City, leaving a trail of widespread damage and loss.

At approximately 2:56 p.m. CDT on May 20, an EF5 tornado with winds reaching upwards of 200 mph struck Newcastle, a suburb of Oklahoma City. The storm carved a path of destruction over 17 miles long and 1.3 miles wide, reducing homes, businesses, and infrastructure to rubble.

As of Monday evening, May 20, emergency responders are still working tirelessly to search for survivors and assess the extent of the damage. At least 24 fatalities have been confirmed, with many more injuries reported. The tornado is part of a wider outbreak that has affected numerous states across the region, causing widespread damage and power outages.
